The importance of dialogue and delivery
Description:
This video is an excerpt from the seminar “Control your mind to win” by Anne Smith, Ph.D., and USPTA Professional. The clip highlights the importance of a coach’s attitude, emotions and word choices when talking with a player and how all these details can affect a player’s response.
Tip:
We cannot be effective as coaches unless we successfully communicate with the people we teach. Each athlete is different in personality, attitude, sensitivity and how he or she handles criticism and adversity. It’s not only about what we say, but how we say it. Our tone, body language, mannerisms, ability to control our emotions, either frustration, anxiety or excitement, all play very important roles in our communication with the player.
It is important to get to know the athlete’s individual features and style so we can adapt our delivery method according to his or her needs. Successful communication results in a player understanding our messages and responding positively to them. Our goal is to find the best approach so we can achieve maximum coaching effectiveness.
