“The Offensive Lob,” taken from USPTA’s “On Court” instructional DVD “Tactical Touch Tennis,” shows USPTA Professional Brett Hobden demonstrating the technique of the offensive lob and the type of segmented swing pattern used for the shot. In this video short, you can learn more about where the target area is for an offensive lob and the appropriate height for the shot.
Tip:
One of the most important elements of hitting a lob is having just the right touch on the shot. If a player is pushed out of place and put on the defensive, and the opponent is rushing the net, he will need to lob high enough and put just the right amount of slice on the ball to ensure that the ball lands safely inside the court – and then he’ll have to get back into position.
On the other hand, if the opponent is at the net and the player is in control of the point, an offensive lob will need enough of an arc to get over the opponent’s head and also enough topspin to drop in the court and win the point.
