Work the pocket

Description:
This Sweet Spot tip with Rick Macci focuses on improving footwork and moving around the ball. He emphasizes the idea that a player should adjust his or her footwork between shots in order to be better prepared and set up for the next shot.

Tip:
You might have heard the line: Footwork is the name of the game. Why do you think experts tend to emphasize this statement? Is footwork really that important in tennis?

As a matter of fact, it is. Movement and footwork on the tennis court are critical. If your player does not move well, you need to address the concern immediately because if he can’t get to the ball, he will not be able to hit it properly. Being able to move to the ball and get into the right position makes hitting easier. The feet must do the work. Players must make footwork adjustments for every ball they receive to ensure they hit the ball in their strike zone. You can judge the ball better by adjusting your feet.

During your training and practice sessions you should always spend some time focusing on the movement and footwork aspect. TennisResources.com has a large number of articles, drills, videos and audio seminars available that discuss and demonstrate how a player can best improve this part of his game. Simply go to www.tennisresources.com and enter the word “movement” or “footwork” into the Quick Search field. You can also choose a more detailed search by clicking on the “Advanced Search,” “General Performance Components” and then “Movement and Footwork.” A variety of resources should match your interest.
