Meet the topspins – The dip drive
Description:
USPTA Professional Brett Hobden explains the shoulder-level dip drive and offers a few examples of the shot, as well as reasons why it has become such an effective shot today.
Throughout the years tennis has developed into a game based on powerful groundstrokes and weapons. Today’s players win points outright by hitting winners from the baseline. It is very common to see the ball being taken on the rise or sometimes even out of the air, taking time away from the opponent.
Tip:
This week’s tip is on the dip drive. This modern shot occurs when a player moves in, meets the ball between shoulder and head height and hits down on the ball with great velocity. This type of shot was difficult to hit many years ago mainly because of the grips players used. Today’s grips and swing patterns have changed and players are able to use the dip drive as a weapon to win their points.
