Pre-serve ritual
Description: Former top 20 WTA Leslie Allen talks about the importance of having a ritual before serving. Check out what she has to say.
Tip:
How many times have we seen your players rush up to the baseline and miss one serve after another? Then, they quickly grab the balls and move on to the other side repeating the same procedure. Does the sequence sound familiar? I’m sure it does. We’ve all seen it.
The time between points and especially the preparation before serve are very much overlooked. Players don’t take the time to recover, clear their heads and think about how they’re going to approach the next point. A pre-serve ritual can be anything from adjusting the strings, relaxing the hitting arm or as simple as bouncing the ball a number of times while planning where they’re going to serve next. All players are different and they’re going to have their own signature rituals, but the idea needs to be emphasized in practice in order to become a habit.
A pre-serve ritual plays a huge role on the player’s performance as it helps him/her be more relaxed, focused and therefore perform better on the serving games.
