Evolution of the game

Description:
Lorenzo Beltrame offers his perspective on the various factors that have contributed to the evolution of today’s game, including equipment technology and the quality of training available to players.

Tip:

We can probably agree today’s game is quite different from the one played many years ago. Several factors have contributed to the evolution of the game: the advanced equipment technology in racquets, strings and tennis gear, technical changes such as grips and stances, the players’ emphasis on fitness and strength training and the sport psychology research that teaches players how to act in between points and on changeovers, to name just a few.

The speed and power of the game dominates pro matches today. We now see very aggressive, almost violent swings versus the smoother, long-flowing finesse strokes that were more predominant in the past. This has led to changes in stances and extremely fast-paced rallies. There is no surprise that today’s game is predominantly played from the baseline!

As the game of tennis evolves, it is important that we as tennis professionals keep up with technology and any other changes that occur.
