How can a player learn shot selection skill and how much of it depends on instinct?
Description:
The following video features USPTA Professionals Jim Parker, Rick Macci, Brett Hobden and Lorenzo Beltrame discussing the tactical subcomponent of shot selection and its importance to a player’s development.
Tip:
Successful shot selection represents a big asset to a player’s game. It is the ability to recognize what is going on in the point, know the shot options available, and make the best decision with minimum amount of thought. Shot selection is dependent on several factors including the player’s court position, that of the opponent’s and the characteristics of the incoming ball (speed, spin, height, direction, depth). During a match, a player may have to use lots of different patterns to win points. It all depends on what the player is capable of doing and what he intends to do to within that point.
