Movement drill – In the pocket
Description: This hand-fed drill works on groundstrokes, movement and conditioning. The balls are fed randomly and force the player to change direction quickly moving side to side, up and back, and around the ball. The player needs to be focused and react very quickly. All shots are hit down the line.
Tip:
Many players believe that having good hand and racquet skills is enough to being a successful tennis player. As many of us know, the best tennis players are the best athletes. It’s simple: if you can’t get to the ball, you can’t hit it.
Players need to spend time practicing their footwork and movement on the court. The better they become at moving and getting to the ball on time, the easier the hitting will be. And the fitter they become, the less errors caused by fatigue during matches. This week’s tip features USPTA Master Professional Rick Macci with a drill that works on explosive first step, movement, footwork and change of direction. By increasing the number of hits, the drill will improve endurance and conditioning on the court.
The drill can be done with all players of all levels simply by scaling the feeds according to the player’s level.
