Technical – Define Tracking Skills

Description:
Master Professional David T. Porter, Ed.D., defines and discusses the technical subcomponent of tracking skills and explains how these skills are important when developing a player’s technique.

Tip:
Have you ever witnessed your player misjudging the bounce of the oncoming ball and getting either too close or too far from it? Were there times when his or her contact point was either to high or too low? If your answer is yes, you may want to focus on the player’s tracking skills.

All shots or tasks in the game of tennis rely on tracking skills. Tracking is defined as the ability to follow a moving object smoothly and accurately with both eyes. In tennis, a player needs to “anticipate” where the ball is going to be and when it’s going to be there, and then move to the predicted spot and be there ahead of the opponent’s ball.
